American sports were on the rise becoming a popular event to follow and watch during the 1920s. From this sports heroes also began to rise, sports like baseball, football, and boxing where drawing huge crowds some compared boxing to the Roman coliseum. These sports were growing in popularity due to the people having to money to pay to see them and host them. This all related to the twenties due to it being the first time these sports became large figures in the United States. Heroes were created from these sports becoming large American figures. Some of the most well-known figures from the 1920s were Babe Ruth, Knut Rockne, George Gipp, and Dempsey vs. Carpenter. (Golway)
Babe Ruth is still a living legend today known as one of the best baseball players to live. Ruth played a majority of his career in New York for the Yankees; his 1921 season may have been the greatest in MLB history. During the 1921 season, Ruth blasted a new record of 59 home runs, 171 RBI, scored 177 runs, batted .376 and had an unheard of .846 slugging percentage. Babe was at this point a well-known superstar and enjoyed the popularity never seen before in baseball. With Ruth leading the Yankees they became the most dominant team in baseball, breaking all sorts of attendance records. In 1923 the Yankees moved into a new stadium it was called “The House that Ruth Built” after his great success in New York. Knut Rockne and George Gipp were Notre Dame Football legends during the 1920s. They brought a playing style to football that was not seen before it was about speed and agility not strength and size. Crowds enjoyed this electrifying style of play they brought. Making Football a very popular event that people attended. The last event that was roaring in the twenties was boxing. The Dempsey vs. Carpenter fight brought great attention to boxing this was a heavyweight fight in front of hundred and twenty thousand people for a 3 million dollar prize. The salon fighter Dempsey fought Carpenter a decorated marine. Dempsey was crowned the winner and now held the boxing title as champion.
