Fundamentalism and Scope Trails!
Fundamentalism was a reaction against the liberal and modern currents of theology (Theology - The study of God and Religious belief) that infiltrated the seminaries and universities. Fundamentalism is a form of religion, which is to be based on the belief of the holy book (Bible), mainly in Christianity.During the 1920s many American Protestant churches, especially those with strong bonds with god became split into Fundamentalist and Modernist
camps, with a group of people who were defined at the moment. Due to Fundamentalism growing more and more popular in people’s belief systems, pressure came to those who don't follow fundamentalism. Legislative banned the teachings of evolution in public schools.
In the year of 1925, John T. Scopes, a high school biology teacher in Dayton, Tenn., was accused and convicted of teaching Darwinism (Charles Darwin created the theory of the evolution of species by natural selection).Behind a question of evolution drew in the larger question whether the Bible was totally free of error. Fundamentalism had a major setback when a feeble witness William Jennings Bryan gave a performance for the prosecution and the unfavorable publicity given to the case in the secular press.(Dulles)
